AI visibility vs. Google rank: why neither one is optional
It's tempting to treat AI visibility as a subset of SEO — do the SEO well and the AI mentions will follow. Sometimes that's true. It's also often not, and the gap between the two is where a lot of otherwise well-optimised local businesses are currently invisible without knowing it.
Different question, different mechanism
Google rank answers: given this search term, which pages does Google's algorithm decide are most relevant, weighted heavily by proximity, reviews, and citation consistency. An AI assistant answering "who's a good plumber near me" isn't running that same ranking algorithm — it's generating an answer from what it has learned about the space, which correlates with but isn't identical to search rank. A business can be #1 on Google and simply not come up in a generated answer, because the two systems are pulling on different signals.
The failure modes are different too
- Google rank failure is visible and gradual — a business slides from position 3 to position 7 and you can watch it happen.
- AI visibility failure is often binary and invisible — a business is either named or it isn't, and there's no dashboard telling the owner that. They only find out if someone happens to ask and happens to tell them.
What this means for a retainer
Treating these as one line item under "SEO" undersells both. A client who's paying for Google rank tracking and getting it is only seeing half the picture of how customers are actually finding — or not finding — them. The pitch isn't "switch from one to the other," it's "you're currently blind to the other half."
