"Not found" isn't the same as "check failed"
When you run an AI-visibility check and a business isn't named in the answer, there are two very different reasons that could be true, and conflating them in a client report is a fast way to lose their trust the first time something goes wrong on the provider's end, not yours.
The two states
- Not mentioned: the model answered the question and simply didn't name your client's business. This is a real, meaningful result — it tells you something about their current AI visibility.
- Check failed: the model call itself didn't complete — a timeout, a provider outage, a rate limit. This tells you nothing about the business. Reporting it as "not mentioned" would be actively misleading.
It sounds like a small technical distinction, but it isn't — a client who sees "not mentioned" three months running, when really the checks kept failing to run at all, has been sold a false picture of their own visibility. Any tool or process you use for this should be built to tell these two apart and report them differently, not silently collapse one into the other.
What to look for
If you're evaluating a tool for this — or building your own manual process — ask specifically: what does this show me when the AI provider itself is down? If the honest answer is "it just shows not mentioned," that's a gap worth knowing about before you put it in front of a client.
